LICENSE TO VIOLATE THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH?

There’s an interesting debate described in Slate today about conflicting First Amendment rights, relating to, of all things, partisan slogans on state license plates. Being an ardent believer in free speech, women’s reproductive rights, and the separation of church and state , I’m not quite sure which side to come down on in this one.

That was an interesting article. My favorite quote: :Immediately, a South Carolina legislator introduced a “Choose Death” license plate…As an Existentialist, I could go for one of those. By the way, I’m not sure that separation of church and state is an applicable issue here. While most of your anti-abortion types tend to be religious, the matter is more of an ethical issue, akin to deciding when to pull the plug or euthanize a person, don’t you think? – R.

Separation was mentioned in the article, I think fairly, because the principle prohibits ‘excessive entanglements’ (that’s the U.S. Supreme Court’s term) between the government and any religion. But maybe not…a ‘Support the NRA’ or ‘Support Greenpeace’ license runs into the same free speech issues and has nothing to do with SoCaS. Wonder how many people signed up for the “Choose Death” license? And also wonder what’s next: Choose Life billboards on the lawn of the Florida State House?
