JOANNE KURY

It will be great to see so many faces, that I have only seen in the yearbook.  After graduating from Kelvin in í69, I went into the School of Nursing at the University of Manitoba and graduated from that program in 1973.  Bob and I were married that July.  I began working with the City of Winnipeg in Public Health in September 1973 and continued as a Public Health Nurse with the City until the birth of our first child (Heather) in September 1976. We moved to Brandon for 18 months- Bob is a Civil Engineer and was on some short term assignments.  Amanda was born in 1978.  We moved to Edmonton in 1979.  While there I continued nursing at the University Hospital, mostly in Emergency, ICU and the Burn Unit.  In 1984, Bob went on with the Federal Government, Indian and Northern Affairs, and we moved to Yellowknife. It was a great place to be.  Tim was born there in 1985.  We moved back to Winnipeg later that year, back to River Heights and have stayed here since.  David was born here in 1987.  No more moves, no more kids!

In 1991, I decided to go back to school and study Theology, and graduated in 1996 with a Master of Theological Studies and was commissioned into Ministry in the United Church that year.  I have worked at Stella Mission in the North End as youth programme coordinator, for five years, I was in solo ministry on the Warren-Meadow Lea pastoral charge just north of the city and now for the past 4 years, have been in ministry at Charleswood United Church here in Winnipeg. My brothers and parents moved to Vancouver in 1973- my dad died in 1978 but mum is still in her own home and doing well.  Peter is nearby in Mapleridge and Don is now in Calgary.   All four of our kids have attended River Heights and Kelvin, the girls having graduated, Tim graduating in another week, and David going into grade 11.  It is still so great to walk through the halls at the school, off to parent meetings and band concerts, and see the old pictures on the walls of operettas and track teams.
