A NEAT BLOG TRACKING TOOL

buzz meter

Thanks to Judith Meskill’s Knowledge Notes blog for bringing the Waypath Buzz-o-Meter to my attention. The tool tracks the total number of blogosphere mentions in the past ten weeks, and the week-to-week trend in mentions, for up to five topics at a time. The chart above is a sample output. Buzz-o-Meter computes blog mentions of the Democratic Party nominees in the past ten weeks as follows: Howard Dean 19,000, John Kerry 7000, Dennis Kucinich 4000, and Wesley Clark 3000. It’s fast, and fun to play with, and you can post the results on your blog using supplied html, so that it will update automatically over time. Track your name, or your blog’s name, see what’s coming up and what’s passÈ, and what’s making a comeback. Along with Technorati’s cosmos and interesting recent blogs lists, GeoURL, World as a Blog, and the Eatonweb blog directory, it’s quickly become one of my favourite blog tools.

And for those of us who want to be trendsetters instead of -followers, it’s an easy way to find out what not to write about. Now if only it could tell whether something was mentioned in a positive or negative context…
