Each year the Edge Foundation asks a big question, and a lot of people try to answer it. This year, in response to Newton’s Laws, Murphy’s Law, and Burke’s Law, the question is “What is Your Law?” Here is a link to the introduction and the first of seven pages of answers. Here are my fifteen favourites: Here’s a stab at a couple of mine: So what is your law? |

My law: Be nice and be civil. It doesn’t cost anything and in the end makes things better and easier.
Where sound bites exist, bad information drives out good.
Technology is “the application of innovation” in a material society. And it is often delivered without any regard for the non-material society that it is thrust upon. In saner worlds, people strive for understanding. Not longer bridge spans.
“Read much more than you write” I must be doing well then :)
Dave’use technology to end run culture’… I’m surprised at this statement. It could be easily misconstrued to mean techno-determancy of the “Don’t Automate – Obliterate” BPR school of Hammer and Champy, and I’m really sure that’s not what you meant. Take a look a the Social life of Information (http://www.slofi.com/toc.htm ) when they talk about the need to Socalise technology (I can’t remember where it is but there is a discussion of how Bell socialed the Telephone) One other quote from the Laws (which is a great link by the way) from Brian EnoCulture is everything we don’t have to doWe have to eat, but we didn’t have to invent Baked Alaskas and Beef Wellington. We have to clothe ourselves, but we didn’t have to invent platform shoes and polka-dot bikinis. We have to communicate, but we didn’t have to invent sonnets and sonatas. Everything we do
Better to tend to perfection then to pretend to it.
If it isn’t powerful, it isn’t the truth.
It may not be particularly thoughtful, but some years ago I formulated Evan’s First Law of Human Sexuality, which runs thus: “If you can think of it, somebody wants to fuck it.”The corrolary is: “And they probably have a website.”
If you read more than you think, you can’t read.
Here are Lynch’s 15 Laws of the Neurosociety:http://www.corante.com/brainwaves/archives/002697.htmlCheers.PS Evan’s law is pretty funny…
This is our personal hero’s journey: If you don’t embark on the journey to love and understand the dark corners of your soul, you are missing out on what makes you complete and whole.
Thanks everyone — some great efforts.Dermot: I don’t like Brian Eno’s quote — I think culture is learned/preferred ways of doing things (and not just things we don’t have to do), and it does change slowly. And I hope people don’t misconstrue by comment about technology — I should have given an example, like the birth control pill.
My law: read Dave Pollard’s blog ;-)I ALWAYS learn something useful – only problem is I’m not a fast enough learner to keep up with his mind !
