WORLDWIDE FISHERY STOCKS ON VERGE OF COLLAPSE

whale Here’s yet another example of the Tragedy of the Commons. Scientists report that, due to a combination of overfishing, environmental degradation and inability of nations to agree upon stewardship standards, worldwide fishery stocks sit on the verge of collapse. The entire global marine ecosystem has been depleted by 90%, and rendered extremely fragile, and with current fishing volumes and technologies, additional 90% reductions will occur in as little as 15 years. Meanwhile, the eco-holocaust denyers carry on relentlessly: The Government of Newfoundland has said it will not prosecute violators of the Canadian Federal Government’s draconian fishery shutdown designed to deal with the problem; it wants the fishing grounds re-opened. When will we ever learn?
